Title: Do our Greater Painted Snipes have a future in HK?
Post by Owlet-nightjar on Mar 24th, 2004, 10:53pm
We are painted snipes,  we want to demonstrate against destroying our habitat.  we have struggled to survive here.  Please help to save our habitat...   Do you want us to disappear in HK?  Do you think we can or should all move into the Wetland park?

"  ...The absence of this species from the Mai Po area means that it is the only wetland dependent species breeding in Hong Kong whose habitat is not directly protected.  The pace of development in Hong Kong is such that without the protection of freshwater marshes such as those at Long Valley and Kam Tin Greater Painted-snipe could soon crease to breed here."

Owlet-nightjar,

I'm impressed at your picture of Painted-snipe; they can be really tricky to see on the ground, let alone to photograph!

Where in Shek Kong did you take the photo? I do a lot of work with the species and know several locations around Kam Tin/Sha Po, but I would be interested to know where else they occur nearby. Especially because this appears to show a male and female bird.

I agree with you that protection of these sites is very important. It's good news that birds have been seen at the wetland park recently, but other sites are fast disappearing - recently yet another good location at Kam Tin has been modified and is probably now unsuitable. It would be a shame if the remaining habitat was also lost.

John, it was nice to talk to you at Mai Po on Wednesday.  As I've mentioned, there was a site in Ping Kong Village, near the public light bus station,  which was discovered by "Kwok-Jai" Cheung  in 2003.  There were a few pairs in Sha Po, Kam Tin near to the place where Grey-headed Lapwing used to be seen.   More than 10 birds were seen by the Freedom Team in Ho Sheung Heung during the Society bird race in January. The site in Shek Kong is adjacent to a pig farm.   It seems that the place is going to disappear soon.   4 male, 2 female were once seen there.

I wonder if you could let us know more about this species, for example, how many birds have been seen regularly in the Wetland Park, population in HK...etc.

John's last message regarding the different sites at which this species has been recorded highlights the importance of Society members submitting records of rare or important species. Such records will be archived in the database and will allow attention to be drawn to the existence of other sites for rare species. I hope that all the observers at these other sites can submit records detailing numbers of birds, dates and the exact location so that we can publish them in the bulletin or Bird Report. This will give developers and their advisors no excuse for not including the data in any Ecological Impact Assessmentthe Society's Conservation Committee, and will alert AFCD to the importance of these small sites.
