Something that I haven't seen for a long time.

Another "bird tick" got at Yuen Long near the western bus terminal :'(

It was named "rice bird" (Yellow-breasted Bunting, if it is not sparrows or other birds).

The selling price is HK$5 each.

I remembered some discussion in the past here...

Can anybody advise what is the latest status of the bunting?

Is it near-threatened?

Yes, it is Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (2004).

I got this today at a frozen food supermarket at Kennedy Town (°í¥§¦a«°):'(

Selling price: HK$20 per pound

The package didn't mention the source nor information of the distributor, except the shop's name.

On 1 July this year, the government of Guangdong designated the Yellow-breasted Bunting among one of the species to be put under intensive conservation. All proceeds from illegal killing, trapping, trading, processing, exploitation, storage, transportation, exporting of protected species would be confiscated and a fine between ten and one hundred thousand RMB could be imposed.

Despite the threat of bird flu, large numbers of ¡§rice birds¡¨ (Yellow-breasted Buntings) were for sale at open markets in Sansui, Guangdong. Workers plucked the birds with bare hands. Those involved in the trade said the business was too lucrative to abandon.
