Message Issued by the WWF Hong Kong Mai Po Office

Over the past few autumns, the ¡¥Scrape¡¦ (gei wai 16/17) at Mai Po has been drained so that new islands could be made to encourage more birds to roost (and breed) there. This work has mostly been successful and this Autumn (from September to the end of October), we are planning to partially drain the Scrape again for the last year of earthmoving works.

There will be two main types of works. One is to lower the height of Island 1 (opposite Hide 1) and use the soil to build a number of smaller islands in front of Hides 3 and 5. The other work will be to use a digger and backhoe to remove the grasses that have been growing out from the side of the gei wai by the dirt track onto the Scrape. This is needed because otherwise, the grasses will take over the open water and mud on the Scrape and there will be little room for the birds. Please refer to the attached diagram.

Since there have been many shorebirds roosting on the Scrape this autumn and there are still Greater Painted Snipe with chicks, we will not be draining down the Scrape completely unlike previous years. Instead, we will only drain the gei wai by enough so that we can get the earthmoving done and still keep enough water to attract birds.

In order to get the work completed quickly, we may need to work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, especially on days when there is a low tide in the Bay.

It is unfortunate that we have to do the work in the autumn. Traditionally, all earthmoving works at Mai Po have been done during the dry winter season. However, there were complaints that this was also the time when many wintering waterbirds would be using Deep Bay so works are now not allowed in winter. Spring is not possible because of the spring passage of large numbers of shorebirds, then the summer is bad because of disturbance to breeding snipe and stilts. The only time available then is the autumn.

We are also undertaking a bird study to see how the completed earthmoving works affect waterbird species and counts. The study should provide valuable scientific information for ornithological studies in Hong Kong and the design of future wetlands.

We hope that you will understand the reason for these works and the constraints under which these works are carried out. This is the final earthmoving work to be done on the scrape to improve the islands and we do not envisage any more earthmoving work for at least the next 5 years.

WWF is always pleased to have comments from users of the Reserve about the work we do and ways to improve the Reserve. If you do have any comments, then please contact the Mai Po staff and we will do what we can to help. Our contact is Tel: 2471-6306 ; Fax: 2482-0369 ; e-mail: lyoung@wwf.org.hk.

Thank you very much for all your support and cooperation.

A thought come to me that may be it is possible to improve monitoring of bird and wildlife at night by using infrared (IR) light.   Some of the most stunning videos are taken by using IR.  That include IR lights and IR camera or IR video camera.  Keep that in mind.

Dear all,

Completion of Earthmoving Works

After two months of continuos earthmoving work on gei wai 16/17 to improve the habitats for waterbirds, WWF can confirm that today (Friday 28th October) will be the last day of work and machinery will retreat from the area.

The gei wai will be flooded during tonights 2.0m tide and then flushed several times over the next few days to reduce the acidity of the soil/substrate. This is necessary to avoid any potential negative impacts upon aquatic organisms.

WWF wishes to thank all users of Mai Po Nature Reserve for their patience during September and October and for understanding the need for this management.

Regards,

WWF Mai Po Office
