Anyone who has been to Kam Tin over recent weeks/months will have noticed that the edge of the Buffalo Fields has again been subject to dumping of construction waste.

I was in the area today and discovered that this dumping has now spread to another nearby area of abandoned agricultural fields which are probably the most important location for Greater Painted-snipe at Kam Tin (and possibly in Hong Kong).  This species is usually present in these fields, especially at this time of year, and breeding has been recorded several times in recent years.

The fields are also very good for other wetland-dependent species, including Common, Pintail and Swinhoe's snipe and small bitterns (I have recorded yellow, cinnamon and Schrenck's bittern here)  Grey-headed lapwings are also sometimes present in winter.

I have reported the incident to EPD in the hope that they will be able to take action to stop this dumping which is threatening to ruin this ecologically important site.
