Dear OBers,
A happy 2004!

For all those interested in Asian birds, the very latest postings on the WBKEnglish website include a note on the distribution and status of twenty two gull taxa in South Korea, with special reference to the excellent new "Gulls" book by Malling Olsen and Larsson at:
http://www.wbkenglish.com/gullsstatdist.aspand our just-completed 2003 South Korean Birding Year Review. The  Review contains hundreds of records and counts, some stunning images of the (at least) twelve new species recorded in South Korea in 2003, and some other major national rarities, topped off with a couple of the best shots ever taken of the rather more regular Chinese Grey Shrike and Oriental White Stork...

In addition, the site provides further information on one of the region (and the world’s) most urgent onservation issues of 2003 and 2004 ?the massive Saemangeum reclamation (for those not following the issue, the
Saemangeum estuaries form THE staging site for the endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper and many other threatened migratory waterbird species; the reclamation remains suspended pending ongoing court hearings). Our home-page introduces the efforts of a growing number of people to keep this devastating project in the media spotlight, by providing background
information on our plans for the Ramsar Wise Use of Wetlands? World Wetlands Day (on February 2nd). Highlight includes the visit by a wetlands activist and a spiritual/environmental leader from South Korea to the UK to perform a ritual walk on behalf of Saemangeum and other threatened wetlands, synchronized with events in Switzerland, Italy, probably Thailand and
Germany, and also in South Korea of course!  Only three weeks away from World Wetlands Day, we are still looking to get as many people from as many different countries as possible involved, and all that is really needed is a desire to do something for wetland birds and a single morning ?that of Sunday, February 1st.
Regularly updated information on the World Wetlands Events for Saemangeum and other threatened wetlands is at:

Please feel free to post the URL as widely as possible, with all enquiries for those wishing to join, (wherever you live!) to< wbkenglish@aol.com >and <spoonbill@hotmail.com>.

With very best wishes for 2004: May it be equally good for both the region’s
birds and birders!
