Subject: News on recently sighting of the Spotted (Nordmann's) Greenshank
Tringa guttifer in Peninsula Malaysia

Dear birders,

The Spotted (Nordmann's) Greenshank Tringa guttifer is one of the world's most endangered shorebird species. The global population of the species was estimated as only 250 -1,000 birds (Wetlands International 2002). The species breeding at the coast of eastern Russia, and migration passage through East Asia and non-breeding period mainly at Southeast Asia and East part of south Asia.

According to Threatened Birds of Asia (BirdLife International 2001), substantial numbers the species were recorded in South Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan  on passage, and in Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia in winter.

Peninsular Malaysia has been recognized as one of the most important wintering ground for this species with frequently wintering records since early 1900s, particularly with the count of more than 90 birds in November 1964 at Tanjong Belanak, Perak State. However, due to no significant concentration have been found since 1990s, BirdLife International (2001) has concluded the species possibly has declined in Peninsular Malaysia.

In November 2003, Mr. Choy Wai Mun, a Penang birder has reported that 24 Spotted Greenshanks at Bagan Tambang-Bagan Belat, Penaga district, north-eastern coastline of Seberang Perai at Penang State (posted on the Malaysia [birders] listserver on 14 November 2003). On 6 January 2004, I visited the site again with Mr. Choy as part of the Asian Waterbird Census, we have counted a total of 31 spotted Greenshank this time during the high tide.

Beside the exciting records in Penang, birders has recorded relatively high number of spotted Greenshanks at kapar Power Station at Selangor State (near KL), the most important high tide roosting sites for shorebird in Malaysia and also the first sites for Malaysia for the East Asian-Australasian Shorebird Site Network.  The most recently count is on 11 January 2004, 6 individuals were counted by Mr. Mah Tech Onn and Mr. Yang Chong (posted on the Malaysia [birders] listserver on 12 January 2004). The highest count of the species at Kapar is 8 individuals on 6 April 2003 by Mah Teck Oon and Dr Neoh Chin Boon (posted on the [OB] listserver on 23 April 2003). The message reported by Ong Tun Pin has also reported one single bird was recorded by Dr Chan Ah Lak at Kuala Gula, Perak State (Between Penang and KL) on 18 Nov 2002.

With the January 2004 count at Bagan Tambang-Bagan Belat, Penang (31) and Kapar (6), the minimum records of the species at Peninsular Malaysia is 37 birds at one time.  The population of the Spotted Greenshanks could be even higher if the coast of peninsular Malaysia could be well covered by the
AWC.

I would like to encourage all the birders in Malaysia and with in the countries of the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) to actively participate the AWC to find out more exciting news of the Spotted Greenshank, as well as many other waterbird species. For more information on AWC please visit the website at http://www.wetlands.org/IWC/awc/awcmain.html

Best regards,

David Li
