Dongting Lake Bird Race
On 4-8 December 2003, some members of the Society joined the "2003 Swarovski China Dongting Lake Bird Race". Bird watchers from other provinces formed 17 teams. Richard Lewthwaite, Apache Lau, Jemi and John Holmes and Carrie Ma formed the "HKBWS Team", Yu Yat Tung formed the "Greater Flamingo Team" with bird watchers from Beijing (Liu Yang, Lei Jinyu) and Macau (Silvia Choi). The aim of the event was to promote bird watching, to raise public awareness of birds and ecotourism.

The event was a good information exchange platform. The vetting process was a serious one -- H F Cheung was one of the member of the vetting committee. For the result, Green Earth Volunteer Team got the highest record (97 species), and the Greater Flamingo Team got the second highest. HKBWS Team got 73 species; we have also got the "Best Oral Examination" prize (i.e. no birds were remove from our list) .

Some of us left behind after the race to join a bird survey at Dongting Lake. Thank you for H F Cheung sponsoring the survey.
