Title: Best time to watch water-birds at the bird hide Post by T M Siu on Mar 27th, 2004, 10:14pm I have been to Mai Po many times. Each time when I went to the bird hide at the water front of Deep Bay, I was disappointed that it was either high tide with no birds seen or it was low tide that al the birds were miles away! Could anyone one kindly guide me so that I can be at the bird hide at the best time of the day. It seems that the time of high/low tides and the tide level determine where the birds are located. Can anybody teach me how to interperate the tide graph posted by the Hong Kong Observatory. Thanks ??? |

For high tides at 2.3m or even higher, you have to go there even earlier since the birds may leave the mudflat before reaching the highest tide level. |

Title: Re: Best time to watch water-birds at the bird hid Post by TUNG on Mar 28th, 2004, 2:07am Tide is an important factor for bird watching in Mai Po and Tsim Bei Tsui area. We usually firstly note about the height of high tide. It is because the high tide will cover all the mudflat by water and most of the waterbirds will go into Mai Po for roosting. Birdwatchers usually go to Mai Po when the high tide can reach over 2.0m (Note: tide at Tsim Bei Tsui, not other places). If the high tide is about 2.0 to 2.2m, boardwalk is the best place. If the tide is even higher, go to see birds in the reserve. The best tide in Tsim Bei Tsui is about 1.3 to 1.5m. Tung |
