An exceptional one hour wildlife documentary on birds life. This story is told without commentary, only images and great music which perfectly highlights drama action.

Three years of waiting, snooping and shooting finally resulted in this extraordinary movie on birds secret lives. Thanks to that it was possible to immortalize unique scenes of birds¡¦ lives on the movie print.

Crowns and buzzards fighting over a carcass, eagle¡¦ s hunt and an attack on cormorants colony, pairing dances of black-grouses and cranes ¡V all of them you can see in the movie accompanied by no world of commentary and passionate music. An unbelievable beauty of the North-East Poland nature was stressed by effects made on birds by the atmospheric phenomenon ¡V wind, storm and rain. Breathtaking shots and dramatic action gives you an illusion of a feature film, but sometimes the nature is even richer than our imagination. Besides from the fighting and hunting scenes, there is a place for very nostalgic and romantic moments of parental love and care. This fascinating film shows both the beauty of birds¡¦ world and its bloody rapacity.

Review press (extract) :
Jonathan Livingston Seagull would be aghast at the cutthroat aviary world revealed in Krystian Matysek's "With Beak and Claw." Beautifully shot (over three years) docu resembles Disney "True Life Adventures" in that it builds
colorful, contrived mini-dramas by cutting together footage shot at different times -- though the oft-grisly fights and feedings aren't nearly cute enough to have passed muster with Uncle Walt. Subfeature length won't permit pic the wider play accorded concurrent "Winged Migration," but it's a fine item for fest, broadcast and educational programmers.
Shot in several Polish national parks, cinematographer Matysek's first directorial effort builds an intricate sense of the interconnectedness among all things in forest and wetlands -- from seasonal weather changes to an old tree's collapse, from a hawk roaring down on a poor groundhog to cranes' ritual battles for mating rights and a ravens vs. buzzards scrap over carrion. Lynx, beaver, etc. in addition to numerous bird species are among the "cast" here, and painstakingly attained camera intimacy is aces ¡V as are sometimes breathtaking images. Excerpts of existing orchestral works amplify melodrama of this satisfying, somewhat old-fashioned nature semi-fiction.
