For members' information, message from Warran Lee Long Wetlands International - Oceania about recent shorebird work in Kamchatka and Alaska in particular to alert observers to the new colour leg-flag code (Yellow/Black) that was used in August at Moroshechnaya Estuary, Kamchatka Penninsula, Russian Far East

September 2004

The International Shorebird Expedition to Moroshechnaya Estuary, Kamchatka Penninsula was a big success, and the team has just reported preliminary results and achievements - including some new colour flagging that deserves to be reported immediately. In the 10-person team were:

A summary of their report includes:

Population Monitoring - A total of 7 surveys were carried out from the spit mouth approx 10km south along the river bank and ocean beach. Most numerous species encountered were Dunlin, Red necked Stint, Whimbrel and Bar tailed Godwit.

Banding & Colour Leg Flagging - Mist netting took place in low tundra depressions around base camp where a total of 11 nets were erected. A total of 227 birds were captured and fully processed.

On 9 August 2004 the first Yellow over Black legflag (Kamchatka Peninsula) was attached to a Dunlin! The preliminary summary of banding and colour leg flagging includes:

Dunlin 123  ( predominant juvenile)
Red necked Stint 85  ( all juvenile)
Mongolian Plover 11
Red necked Phalarope 1
Great Knot 5 (all juvenile)
Whimbrel 2

Blood samples were obtained from about half the banded Dunlins.

Fecal samples were obtained from most species.

Flag Sightings Most exciting news!!!!  The following is a summary of our observations:
Orange - 1 Red Knot
Yellow - 6 sightings on Bar tailed Godwit (assessed to be 4 individual birds)
WHITE - 7 sightings on Bar  taled Godwit ( assessed to be 2 individual birds)

We are well aware that this is the first time ever that New Zealand flagged birds have been recorded from the Russian/Asian shores during Southward Migration. It will most likely create extensive discussion but at this stage it seems likely that New Zealand is also hosting a small portion of the menzbieri subspecies. This assumption seems to fit the regular number of yellow flags that is annually reported from the North Island of New Zealand.
