Title: help for Hong Kong 'virgin' 英國鳥友問酒店
Post by macca on Nov 26th, 2005, 5:02am
Dear all,

I'm planning my first (and long overdue) visit to Hong Kong in April 2006 and need any help offered with the best location to make my base for the trip. Whilst I am a very serious Uk birder, this trip will include my wife and 7 year old son, who whilst not 'real' birders, are used to birding off beat locations and not seeing much of me when birding gets good (re-daylight!). However, I'm trying to compromise so have looked at a hotel complex in Tin Shui Wai (rather than roughing it somewhere, which they usually get!) which appears to be close enough to Mai po in particular. Any ideas if this is a good location, am I missing somehwere else (better?) or does it really make much difference? Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I don't have a clue whats good, bad or ugly ;)

Best wishes, Ian (Greater Manchester, UK)

Hi Ian,

Yes, the one at Tin Shui Wai seems to be a good choice for birding at Mai Po. Note that hotels at Shatin are closer to Tai Po Kau (and also the urban areas) but it really depends where your prime target is.

Tin Shui Wai is a sub-urban area so it will take some travelling if you want to visit the "standard" tourist attractions. But don't worry, Hong Kong is a very small place and you can get to most locations within 1 to 2 hours by public transport.

Many thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately I couldn't get in the hotel I fancied as all were fully booked or didn't accept children (!?). Eventually I plumped (or should I say the missus booked) for one in Kowloon. I realise this might not be the best solution but fact of the matter is atleast I'M THERE!!

As for my main target. Strangely (you might think), most of my main interests are in gaining more field experience in the identification of those species found in Hong Kong in April that are very rare in Europe (no I dont keep a world list). I did think about staying at Mai Po, but I intend to cover as much ground and habitat as possible, I still may if possible stay for a night or so.

I would appreciate if anyone has contact addresses for obtaining permits to Mai Po and if you know where I can obtain a copy of Diskins Site Guide.

Cheers again,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Please refer to the following regarding entry permits to Mai Po:

WWF(HK)'s website (http://www.wwf.org.hk/eng/maipo/introduction/maipomwec_guidedtours.html)

Mai Po Permit - see Lew Young's reply (http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=MembershipAffair;action=display;num=1114612833;start=7)

I believe WWF(HK) should have special arrangements for foreign visitors so please contact them direct.
