Post by Carrie Ma on Feb 13th, 2006, 10:57pm
Raptors of the World: A Field Guide
James Ferguson-Lees and David Christie

320 pages, 118 colour plates.
Christopher Helm

First ever raptor world field guide, which uses all of the plates from the author's 2001 'Raptors of the World' handbook. There is a concise, revised text to all 340 species on facing pages. Several of the plates have been reworked and repainted for this guide, and there is an updated colour distribution map for each species.

The Raptor Almanac covers comprehesively many aspects of raptors.  To give you an idea of its coverage, I list below its chapter titles:-

What is a raptor?
Evolution and distribution
Anatomy and physiology
Raptor senses
Flight
Behavior
Social structure
Courtship and breeding
Nesting and nestlings
Hunting and diet
Migration
Life span and mortality
Conservation challenges
Legal protection
Management techniques
Conservation case histories
Raptors and symbols
Falconry
Raptors and economics
Hawk-watching
Helping raptors

It gives something of everything and always includes tables of comparison showing interesting differences among species.  A good coffee table book suitable for beginners in raptors.   :)

Concerning the purchase of birding books, I would like to ask if the HKBWS would be able help placing orders collected from individual members.  That will save shipping costs or even purchasing costs if orders are in common.  Birding references are hard to find in HK and I think members would tolerate a batching period of say quarterly durations.  :)
