This is a shot of the Grey-headed Lapwing captured last autumn at the MPNR 米埔. A pair of them were spotted that fine day in fact. I have never seen them since and I suspect it is a rather scarce species by now ...

KK

Do you have any photos of the Grey-headed Lapwings you saw today?

It is very unusual to see them from the boardwalk. In fact, I don't think there has been any previous record there.

Geoff,

I took a few flight shots but have yet to finish the roll of film; so I'm not sure if I make it ;D

BTW, I believe Samson So also saw them and he had taken some shots too with them standing on the mudflat ...

Geoff,

There's previous record probably 4 years ago.  I remember a grey-headed lapwing was spotted from the boardwalk.  I am sorry that I havn't submitted the record.

Dear all,

The birds we saw yesterday were probably juvenile, as they all have brownish head and the lack of the dark breast band.

These birds were found standing among the Grey Plovers at first but later on flied away when a Marsh Harrier approached.

Hi KK,

I have seen lots of your photos on birds standing on water. I notice that the colour of water is so blue and beautiful.  I have never seen this kind of blue colour with naked eye, even the clean water of Hawaii where I could see the bottom. Maybe I didn't take enough notice.

Did you use polariser for this shot ? Or is there a particular period of time for this kind of blue colour ? Or is it an exaggerated characteristics of a slide film ? Or did you adjust contrast, saturation etc. with Photoshop ?

The blue colour is beautiful but it seems a bit unnatural.

Bernard.

There are currently 9 Grey-headed Lapwing around the Buffalo Fields at Kam Tin. The birds can be difficult to find, but are usually around an area of fish ponds South West of the Buffalo fields, close to the West Rail construction. One of the favoured areas is the tidal drainage channel immediately next to the West Rail mitigation areas.

Also in the area are a large flock of Black-tailed Hawfinch (up to 86 counted) North of the buffalo fields and up to 4 common starling.

No, I do NOT use PLC for all my bird shots. The photo in this thread was taken one early morning with the sun just  right behind me and with a clear blue sky hence the beautiful deep blue color of the water. Slide film does tend to produce a slight blue cast on a sunny day (with more pronounced UV) compared to negative/print film. The photographer can take this to their 'advantage' when shooting nature shots ...  ;D
