Title: Re: Great Egret Inflight (High Key) Post by Daniel CK Chan on Jan 16th, 2003, 1:23pm Hendrix, Let me join in as an ex-Nikon user using flash for taking bird photos. ;D I had often used rear curtain sync mode for fill flash given that there was enough background for your desired shutter speed (up to 1/250 sync speed of my F100 (or 1/300 and 1/500 for F5 and D1X respectively)). You can certainly use manual mode as a main flash if surrounding light is too dark. In order to enpower my SB28 for tele-works, I had used better beamer for the flash photography. As a Canon user now with EX420, the life is easier by setting the flash as FP (High speed sync) and Av mode (Aperature priority) for fill flash. However, I should set my camera as P or M mode for main flash photos. KK, Pls correct and/or supplement my words. Thanks. ;) Rgds Daniel |

Title: Re: Great Egret Inflight (High Key) Post by Daniel CK Chan on Jan 16th, 2003, 6:59pm Henry, You are true. The FP flash is always not effective for object too far away. I like using it as fill flash but not for full flash. Hendrix, The Arite site should be the best buy although the product is too simple to cost that much dollar. Rgds Daniel |

Much has been covered by Daniel above. What I want to add is this. I find fill flash technique particularly useful when shooting bird in backlighting. I'd start with -2 EV flash compensation and increase this value gradually to suit your taste and eventually you arrive with a optimal value that you like. With bird in flight and with a synch speed of no greater than 1/250s, percise panning is vital. With lots of practice you will attain the desirable result I'm sure. It goes without saying, the use of flash extender such as the Better Beamer (BB) is a must and the subject was covered in one of the earlier post in this forum.
