KK,

Good capture ;) even if they did not come close to the hide. :-[

It looks as if the White Pelican was boycotted by the D Pelicans, so interesting.;D

Did you use smaller aperture with X-400 print film?

Daniel

I was told that the WP might have been an escaped one; but I doubt it  ::)  It seems to stick to the flock of DP very well ...  It would be interesting to wait until March when they will be leaving for home. Will the WP join them too? ;D

Yes, I did stop down to f/11 in this case and IS activated shooting w/ a monopod!

I am sorry to have to say that I think the White Pelican is almost certainly an escape.  I had seen it briefly in flight before last weekend, and had thought it showed moult of the inner primaries and that this was symmetrical.  In short it looked like a moulting adult.

However, on Saturday, I had good flight views of it and the Dalmatian Pelicans over Mai Po.  The White Pelican had almost no secondaries, and missing/damaged primaries.  This was asymmetrical and was clearly not normal moult.  If fact it looked to me like extensive damage that could only have occurred as a captive bird. One only has to compare it to moulting Dalmatian Pelicans to see the difference.

However, if any of the many excellent photographers out there get the opportunity to photograph it in flight it would useful to the exact extent of the damage.

Yesterday (and at the weekend) all the Pelicans were seen in flight over Mai Po.

Take this chance to share a photo of White Pelican in-flight which was taken in Africa, 2001. As per Paul said, would like to see and share his in-flight photos before he leave MPNR. 8)

I would also like to share the following photo taken at Maipo ¦Ì®H on 22-2-03. It shows the severely abraded seconaries of the Pelican. Could anybody please tell me whether the bird is the escape African Pelican or any other species? It looks a bit smaller than the nearby Dalmatians.

A very helpful photograph which show that all the secondaries are missing and about two thirds of the primaries.  I am surprised it can still fly!

You can find the news about the escaped pelican in the two messages below which were posted in December 2002:-

Will it be able to migrate with the Dalmatians? Or it will  have to endure the summer alone in Hong Kong!

We certainly hope that this poor fellow will survive!  ;D

Whether it will migrate home together with the D Pelican flock later in March will be interesting to watch ...

I suspect it will regrow but will take a long time. Any expert can attest that?? ;D

If you look closely on the two photos above, all the secondaries on its left wing were gone (trimed?) and a large portion of the secondaries are still intact on the right wing. Without the primaries, the bird will have a real hard time to get airborne ...

:( :(

So it will not be able to follow the Dalmatians north - it won't be able to catch up with them in terms of speed and endurance. In that case I hope it will stay in Mai Po, otherwise it could be stranded in some hostile location, especially in China.

:)

These photos were taken on 5 Oct 2002 in Hong Kong Park. The one in Mai Po seems not this one.

I was down at the WWF boardwalk hides noon today, 7 Mar 03. Apparently all D Pelicans were gone (home?). No sign of the White Pelican anywhere at MPNR either. Hope he/she had gone with them ...   ::)
