One of the larger gulls that can be seen at MPNR's Deep Bay area is the Yellow-legged Gull. The shot was taken on 21 Feb 03. A moment just before it took to the sky ...

It is a great shot but it looks like a Heuglin's Gull (Larus heuglini) to me.

Identification of the Herring Gull [Larus argentatus] group is by no means an easy task. I'm not an expert birder either. So would you mind telling us your reasonings behind your conclusion. Thanks

The most obvious feature that makes this a Heuglin's Gull is the very dark upper wing; Yellow-legged has much paler upperparts.
