Title: Re: Grey-streaked Flycatcher ??? Post by Mike Kilburn on Apr 10th, 2003, 12:13am Hi Bernard You are right. It is a Grey-streaked Flycatcher. You are also right that they can be very diffcult to identify. The problem comes when Sooty Flycatcher shows spotting or rough streaking on the breast. This bird has regular streaks and no darker wash under the streaks (which Sooty tends to do. It also shows no sign of a white collar, which Sooty often shows rather clearly. Also you will find a clue by checking the Avifauna of Hong Kong(pages 411 and 412). You will see that Grey-streaked has a strong spring passage and Sooty (or Dark-sided - the new name) is rare in spring. This bird is indeed rather early, even for Grey-sided Flycatcher. However, such information should only be used as a guide - especially when there are records of Sooty from early April! Cheers Mike |
