Title: Common Moorhen 黑水雞 Post by KK Hui on Apr 9th, 2003, 7:50pm 103 Common Moorhen 黑水雞 Mai Po Nature Reserve 米埔自然保護區 09/4/2003 EOS-10D EF600/4L + EF1.4x Incident light metering at zero http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/PhotoG/kkhui/kkhuicmoorhen01.jpg Although the Common Moorhen can be seen at MPNR easily, it is nevertheless a wary bird that is difficult to approach. I've tried many times in the past to photograph this bird up close but failed ;D At last I had some success this morning ... and here it is! Best kk -------------- www.geocities.com/kkhui_001 |

Title: Re: Common Moorhen 黑水雞 Post by Angus Lau on Apr 11th, 2003, 12:47pm KK, Daniel, When you say 90% and 75% full frame, do you mean the photos posted were cropped by that amount or something else? I am a beginner in bird photography but getting really hooked, particularly after seeing all the amazing pictures here. I wonder how much processing do you normally do in Photoshop such as crop, level, curve, sharpen. Or are they esstentially straight out of the camera? Regards, Angus Lau |

Hi Angus, 90% full frame just means there is 10% of the total frame area being cropped off. In other word, the image you see is almost a full frame image straight out of the camera. Almost all digital images require some sort of post processing work. The use of software application such as PS to 'restore' to its optimum viewing state is desirable. This may be USM, level/curve, color balance etc as you already memtioned. The amount of work however is dependent on the final ends you're aiming for; is it for printing, for web posting or ... In general, it takes only a few minutes of post processing to get it from the digital camera to web posting. Hope the clarification helps! Best kk ------------- www.geocities.com/kkhui_001 |

Title: Re: Common Moorhen 黑水雞 Post by Anguslau on Apr 12th, 2003, 10:23am Hi KK, Thanks very much for your clarification. That confirms some of my thinkings and is very helpful. Whenever I process my images, I often have the guilt that I am "cheating". Particularly because I tend to crop too aggressively due to the fact that my longest telephoto lens is only 300mm. So most my raw images are always very tiny, even with the 2x teleconverter. But thats the only way that I can get some reasonably satisfactory pictures to drive me forward. BTW, I really love your photos. They are great! Regards, Angus |
