I don't think we could id their sex just from their appearance. ???

based on my limited rearing exp. dated back to 20+ years ago, nose color is the prominent factor for sex determination (brown for female and blue/violet for male).  experts, correct me if i am wrong...

I had experience to have a pair of Budgerigar as pet in Japan. Webmaster's understanding is correct.
Male is blue and female is brown.

Ah!  :Pjust find the following description about their sex & age in the book "Parrots - A Guide to the Parrots of the World, Pica Press":-

"Female with brownish (not blue) cere during breeding. Young birds duller with a darker iris and barred forehead. Adult plumage is attained in 3-4 months and males can produce sperm within 60 days of leaving the nest."

How about their cere color during non-breeding time? ???
