Title: Blue-winged Minla 藍翅希眉鳥
Post by Daniel CK Chan on Jun 2nd, 2003, 12:03am
319 Blue-winged Minla 藍翅希眉鳥
Tai Po Kau 大埔滘
31/5/2003
Canon EOS 10D, EF500 IS + 1.4x, ss 1/30, f5.6, Partial Metering @ 0 Compensation, ISO400
Please correct me if my id identification is wrong. Accoring to the Avifauna of HK, its origin should be an escape.

I find that it is very difficult to take artistic birds photos in Tai Po Kau. Especially those birds constantly keep to lower storey in wooded areas like this one, although they are very beautiful.

Can any other photographers share your experience/views for improvement? Thanks.

You know, I am no master of TPK, but as a beholder, here are my $.02:

1. The fg objects (plants?) make it impossible to use flash (I assue you don't). This may help to elimiated the foreground by increasing the contrast using PS. Just a guess: I use this technique most of the time to "eliminate" smog.

2. It looks a tag under on my crappy office monitor. I think an EV +1/3 may help.

3. I know that you are using 10D @ISO400. So it is perfectly safe and clean to shoot ISO1600! (Try ISO3200 yet? ;) ) In this way, you get extra 2 full stops, which makes, correct me if I am wrong, the shutter down to 1/125sec. I guess it is fast enough to catch such active buggers. (I am still saving for a 10D!) BTW, if you cannot stand those noises, try NeatImage, it is the best noise-reduction software out there.

4. Any good price for an EF500mm f/4 (non-IS)?

Catch u later.

Griffin.

Hi Daniel

Blue -winged Minla is not a native bird.  It has escaped or been released andis now well established in the Central NT.

Cheers
Mike

Griffin.

1. Yes, flash will be fooled with foreground plants according to my experience. The result is unpleasant and I don't like to use flash in such complex environment.
2. Thanks. +1/3 may be better though ss 1/15 should be quite challenging
3. Thanks. Will try NeatImage later before using high ISO. I don't like the result produced by Canon software but have not tried CaptureOne yet.
4. Sorry, don't know about where can find the 2nd hand EF500 4.5 lens and its price.

Regards

Okay, to wrap up, 10D has some phenomenal ability at high ISO so you may save on those noise-reduction programs. But, well it is up to you.

Secondly, I am surprised to hear that you are still using ZoomBrowser! I thought it was a common understanding that Canon software is a piece of humm, anyway. You may also wish to try Yarc and BreezeBrowser, both are very sweet. I use BreezeBrowser.

It is okay, I still don't have the $$$ to get anything yet.

I think if you wish to continue, drop me a private email.

Griffin.
