As this is an African native bird, so presumably it must be an escaped bird. Curiously though the tail is in fine condition, the owner must have kept it well! May be there is a better explaination.

I also saw a pin-tailed whydah at Mai Po scrape on 25th May - presumably this is the same bird.

On that date, it had not grown the long tail feathers, which would explain why they appear to be in such good condition now.

Thanks for the detailed information provided.  The bird was spotted at Mai Po (Bird Hide 3, Pond 16,17) at about 2:30pm.Good birding.
