Hi KK ,

Great shot ! I guess you used manual focus, did you ? I don't think any auto-focus camera will work for small birds inflight. You mentioned -1/3 stop metering. Did you use spot metering ? If this small bird is pure white then what metering setting should it be ?

I pre-focus and used 'one-shot AF' on the perch that this little guy was likely to make a landing on. In fact, he barely touched it and took off again in no time. This is a pose of him doing just that! ;D

Incident light metering was used. For a totally white bird such as the egret, a compensation of between -2/3 to -1 1/3 is not unusual with DSLR such as the EOS-10D. This shall also apply if you use EOS 'partial metering' mode.

No, I didn't use flash as I was shooting with early morning direct light. Getting the catchlight was just pure luck in this instant! :)
