Title: Re: Eastern Marsh Harrier (Female)澤鷂 (雌性)Infli Post by Paul Leader on Dec 11th, 2003, 9:51am Extremely useful and educational photographs. They do indeed show two different individuals which are a second-winter female and a second-winter male. For sexing, the first bird is a relatively large, dark-bodied and very pale headed bird (= female) and the second a smaller looking bird with more contrasting plumage and a darker head (=male). It also has greyish central tail feathers. Although they both look superficially like juveniles, a look at the moult pattern shows that they cannot be, as both have two different ages of primaries. They have moulted the outer five and retained the inner five juvenile feathers which are slightly browner and a little more worn. The second bird is very interesting as is shows an underwing very similar to juvenile Pied Harrier, with the silvery grey underside to the primaries. However the body is not richly coloured, the secondaries should be barred on Pied (not uniformly dark) and the rump would be a brilliant white. Please keep posting these photos of birds of prey, they really are very interesting. Thanks, Paul |
