Title: Re: Steppe Eagle Post by Mike_Kilburn on Dec 27th, 2003, 12:22am Hi The new photo looks like a classic adult Greater Spotted Eagle. Two things about the name may help: 1. It is called Greater Spotted Eagle because of the spotting on the plumage of the juvenile, not the adult. It is very unusual for a bird to be named after a feature of the juvenile plumage. 2. The Chinese name Wu Diao means "Dark Eagle" or "Crow Eagle". It is the darkest of all the eagles we are likely to get in Hong Kong. I also noticed that adult Greater Spotted Eagle is not illustrated in the Birds of Hong Kong and South China, but it looks rather similar to the illustration given for Steppe Eagle, which ahs never been recorded here! If you get good views you can also look out for the following diagnostic features - 1. the nostrils on Greater Spotted are round, not elongated as on Steppe Eagle. 2. Also the gape of the bill extents only as far as the middle of the eye on Greater Spotted and to the back of the eye on Steppe Eagle. For further reading I recommend the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent by Grimmett and Inskipp or a highly technical (so technical it becomes rather confusing) approach to eagle identification can be found in the Macmillan Birder's Guide to European and Middle Eastern Birds. Cheers Mike K |
