It is indeed a Brown Shrike, and adult male of the race lucionensis, hence the rich colour of the flanks.

We get small numbers of Brown Shrikes in the winter in HK. There was also one at Nam Sang Wai recently.

Interestingly, they occur in very different habitat than is generally the case in spring and autumn when the highest numbers are present. In winter, they occur in 'park-like' habitats, areas of scattered bushes and trees with open ground between. On migration, they occur in a wide variety of habitats.

Just want to add one more to this report, since one solitary Brown Shrike had been observed to have stayed in the same place in Tat Tung Road (Tung Chung, to the direction of the pier) for about 4 weeks, though disappeared recently.

That was a very interesting observation about a species which holds a regular territory. The habitat inhabited by the Brown Shrike was a small grassland strip next to a highway with moderate traffic load. Despite the irregular disturbance imposed by the traffics and passagers, the Brown Shrike could be found staying in the same area nearly during every visit.  :D

Some other common species could also been found there, e.g. Yellow-bellied Prinia and Dusky Warbler. Indeed common but you can get very close to them  ;D

While the construction work of cable car station is getting started in Lantau, I wish most of the valuable yet vulnerable habitats in Lantau can remain unharmed.
