AT THE TIME OF TAKING THIS PICTURE OTHER BIRDERS KEPT SAYING THAT THIS BIRD IS A SKYLARK. BUT FROM THE SHAPE OF BILL I THINK IT LOOKS LIKE A PIPIT. I THINK IT IS A RICHARD'S PIPIT. I AM NOT SURE. EXPERIENCED BIRDERS PLEASE HELP ME TO IDENTIFY IT.THANKS.

BERNARD.

Hi Bernard

Your bird is a Richard's Pipit.

Why?

1. the very long hind claw
2. no crest on the head
3. long tail

all the skylarks we get in Hong Kong (Oriental and Northern) show a short crest and a shorter tail and never show suh a long hind claw.  The are much more "feijai" - short and fat compared to Pipits, and especially Richard's Pipit, which is the slimmest and longest  of all our pipits.

In flight larks show shorter, broad-based  and somewhat triangular wings and short tails and a pale trailing edge to the wing. Pipits always look longer-winged and Ricard's especially alsways looks longer-tailed.

You can identify it from the other common pipits because
a) Olive-backed has a white spot behind the eye on the ear coverts.  It is also smaller and has a grreenish tome to the back.
b) Red-throated has bold straeking on the breast instead of the fine collar that this brd shows. It is also shorter-tailed and has heavier streaking on the back.  Some birds also  show the red throat especially in early autumn and in spring.

Hope this helps

Mike

The call of Richard's is also distinctive - but hard to describe.
