Title: Re: Raptor identification please Post by Michael Turnbull on Nov 30th, 2003, 12:59pm It's a Common Buzzard. In the field you will have noted it as slightly smaller than Black Kite, with noticeably shorter, broader wings, a thicker, shorter head and neck, a shorter, rounded tail. Plumage is very variable, and this bird is perhaps slightly darker on the underside of the wings and body than many we see, but otherwise quite typical. Now you know what you are looking at, I think you'll find they are quite common and widespread in HK between Nov and March. Mike Turnbull |

Title: Re: Raptor identification please Post by Lynx on Dec 1st, 2003, 11:08pm Thanks Mike, Is it possible that it is a "upland buzzard" instead? I notice that there is a big pale patch at the underbody ??? |

Title: Re: Raptor identification please Post by Mike Kilburn on Dec 2nd, 2003, 9:32am Hi Lynx The other Mike here. No this cannot be Upland Buzzard because they almost always have a more reddish colour and a pale head and rufous-tinged tail. Common Buzzard has very variable plumage so unless you can identify all the features of Upland or anyother buzzard, you should assume its a Common Buzzard. Mike |
