Yes, many furit / nectar feeding birds do take some insects, esp during breeding seasons, as the high -protein nature of insect (and other invertebrates) could supply extra protein for the growth of babies.

Spiders are essential for the development of feather as they contains high level of sulphur, which is important for the growth of feather.

In the UK, Great Tits take more spiders during molting seasons.

In HK, as far as I know, Cattle Egrets also take some non-webbing building spiders.

Do any birdwatchers also observe other birds taking spiders in HK?

Anyway, your observation is great and let us know more about the diet of this beautiful resident.

Cheers,

Captain

Thanks Captain for the detailed information ;D ;D ;D

In fact, this fork-tailed sunbird father was catching food for his 3 babies who are waiting at the tree top 8)

I witnessed the sunbird attacked the spider on its web.   The spider successfully defended the first time when the sunbird attacked from the front. But next time the sunbird attacked from behind and killed the spider.  It's a pity that the AF of my camera was hunting and couldn't capture the moment :P

This father is also great (father's day is coming ?!) and  with excellent skill of raising babies.

Raising three babies is not an easy job.... I guess most woodland birds in HK could successfully raise two babies per brood.  But really have no idea.

Anyway, thanks for the sharing. Quite nice.

Cheers,

Captain
