Title: Re: Egrets (flying) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by me_domchan on Sep 11th, 2004, 9:48pm Interesting formation! But..it seems to me that the "Great Egrets" are too small......when compared to the Little Egrets next to them... |

Title: Re: Egrets (flying) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by Mike Turnbull on Sep 11th, 2004, 10:33pm I think the birds in the photo are Cattle Egrets, of which there is usually heavy passage through HK during September. Mike Turnbull |

Title: Re: Egrets (flying) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by Mike Turnbull on Sep 11th, 2004, 10:36pm On a quick second look I think three are either Great or Inter Egrets, the latter probably, this also being a migatn through HK esp. in Sept. Mike Turnbull |

Title: Re: Egrets (in migration) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by me_domchan on Sep 12th, 2004, 3:44pm May be I should also ask here about the identities of the following egrets: Mai Po Natural Reserve 25/8/2004 EOS 10D, 400/5.6, 1.4X Are they intermediate egrets? Their beaks' line stopped under the eye, but the neck looks like a great egret. http://www.fotop.net/albums/dominicchan/dominicchan56/uid_45673_MP040825.jpg http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/PhotoG/me_domchan/me_domchan_238.jpg http://www.fotop.net/albums/dominicchan/dominicchan56/uid_45680_MP040825.jpg http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/PhotoG/me_domchan/me_domchan_239.jpg |

Title: Re: Egrets (in migration) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by carmen on Sep 12th, 2004, 4:02pm I think it is a intermediate egret. :) Their necks are usually not a reliable factor. :P |

Title: Re: Egrets (in migration) ¥ÕÆO-¸ Post by Koel_Ko on Sep 12th, 2004, 7:00pm Hope to share the three 'necks' with you... Great Egret: Long, often held straight such that it looks even longer than the body, and always thin. Intermdiate: Long, often thinner at the top half and quite thick at the bottom half when held straight, with the impression of 'full-chest' when seen from certain angles. Cattle: Always thick and short for a egret even when held straight. And wish this all helps a bit in the identification of these very angelical birds seen with such relative ease in Hong Kong that we should all take care to value their presence! :D |

Title: Re: Egrets (in migration) ¥ÕÆO¸ Post by me_domchan on Sep 12th, 2004, 7:19pm So..the BENT-S shape of the neck is not a distintive character for great egret...... Thanks Koel! |
