It was too late to arrive the boardwalk hide yesterday but luck to meet this whimbrel and it is close enough to practice the photographic skills learnt on Wednesday.  This photo is not good but posted for comment and discussion.  ;)

Off camera flash, Metz 54Z3, was used with a Wimberley flash bracket and Better Beam to add a "sparkle" of light in the eye.
The original image around 80% full frame and is cropped to place the eye in the frame according to the compositional "rule of thirds".
Workflow : RAW converted into TIFF with C1 and processed in PS.

An excellent shot and the fill-in flash worked well, Felix!
Were you shooting from outside the hide then?

For composition, you got it almost right ... a good effort!
Suggest to have a bit more room at bottom so the legs won't be cut off so to speak! Less space at top will balance it as a result.  ::)

A good shot, felix. I like the warm color of the photo.  Agree with kk for more room at the bottom. Iwould also like more room at the right.

The weather and tide was not good yesterday morning at the broadwalk hide. I think that you had missed nothing, for photography at least ;)

I skipped the module 2 of my flash bracket combo (http://www.tripodhead.com/combo1.html) and mounted the flashgun on my left-handed side instead.  Thus, I could still use the flash inside the hide though it was not a proper setup.

BTW, since the camera was set @f8 & 1/800, the flash was set @HSS without reducing the flash output as I found that the camera automatically controlled and reduced the output under this fill-in situation.  KK, do you think it is correct?

Since the subject was in full direct sunlight ie already in an optimal condition, and assuming the Metz unit's acts just like a Canon's EX unit, the TTL flash intensity setting really plays a less noticeable part on the outcome here.  In a not so ideal lighting situation, the amount of flash will be critical and will have a bigger influence on the desirable otcome though ...
