Title: Re: Night Heron 夜鷺大爆發 Post by Betty on Sep 21st, 2004, 9:47pm I am interested to know what indicates that these night herons are from stonecutter/ Little Green Isand. To my understanding of the following statements/datas, night heron is resident, passage migrant and winter visitors. From 'The Avifauna of Hong Kong' "Herkiots (1941) stated that while night heron certainly bred in Hong Kong, it was apparently much common in winter. In addition, he quoted records from Cheung Chau as indicating it was also a passage migrant. Macfarlane and Maconald (1960) also stated that the species was a passage migrant but that there was also breeding records." " The number of records during 1978-1987, with most in spring (33%) and autumn (33%) and fewer in summer (15%) and winter (19%). From 'Hong Kong Bird Report 1999 & 2000' Monthly waterbird counts of this species at Deep Bay as follows: Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec 60 29 2 30 60 nc 19 66 103 94 53 31 The peak is in Sept. |

Title: Re: Night Heron 夜鷺大爆發 Post by Captain on Sep 22nd, 2004, 5:03pm A regurgitated Koi from Night Herons nesting at the Stonecutters indicates that these birds fed in urban ornamental ponds. As most NH obs in Kln are come from Kln Park, so it is reasonable to guess they come from there. Pls see a paper in HKBR 1998 for detail. Also, most departure flights of NH heading the West Kln direction, so they may end up at the Stonecutters. Unfortunately, they nested on Little Green Island this yr. So, it is still reasonable to guess that some of them still fed at Kln Park. However, there is no rigorous study on their feeding habitat and movement. |

Dear Captain, Why say 'unfortunately'? Are the nesting site of the Night Herons at the Stonecutters Island being disturbed this year? Regards, Etta |
