It must be a challenge capturing this moving grebe with stacked converters ...

In fact, I feel getting close to the bird is more challenging than using stacked converters.  Even this photo is only 80% full-frame. ;)

Like the color and ripple of the water.

I have to agree with you. Getting close to them is really diffcult. I was unable to have them get closer than 20 meters from me this morning despite all sort of things I tried. Reluctantly I have to stack converters again.... ;D
