Title: Little Ringed Plover
Post by Anguslau on Oct 12th, 2005, 9:55pm
Haven't got time to go through most of the images yet. Here is a quick one. :) Thanks for Owen's tips on this wonderful localtion where I can try my first true low angle shot! ;D There are many lessons to learn. Firstly many of my images were not critically sharp! :-[ I guess I was too excited and my hands shaked a little. My shutter speeds were also too slow for such little birds foraging busily. :-[ Manged to find several sharper ones, but they are no way near perfect in other ways. :( The sun only came out very briefly, so most of the images were a bit dull and flat... :( Must try again next time! ;D

The sun makes a big difference.  Nice photos. I hope you didn't get any sand in your lens.Neil.

Yes, Neil. It was actually quite scary to see myself, the camera and lens all covered in mud, sand and salt... :P It appeared that my equipment survived the torture today! ;D

Angus,

Did you use a Skimmer/Ground Pod then? I think it would help to keep out the sand/dirt. Also it looks like a perfect situation for fill ...

Owen, my t-shirt and trousers were all fine. ;D I dropped my tripod though while trying to get on to the bus, produced some deep scratches on the wimberley head! >:(

kk, I used my home-made ground pod. Worked quite well, but perhaps a bit too low. The ground pod allowed me to slide forward as I approach the subject. However, some sand and mud still manage to get onto my equipment when going through some rough grounds. :( I trusted the weather forecast again that it will be sunny! >:( Besides, my pack is already fully loaded with ground pod, ground mat, camoflage cloth, folding chair etc etc. Next time though, I must bring my flash no matter with the forecast said. :)

To save wear and tear on the clothes and equipment it is better to go on an incoming tide and wait for the birds to come to you. Because of the hills on either side of the muflats you don't get very low sun coming in but the birds do angle their heads a lot to check out the sky so you can get catchlights in the eyes. Neil.
