Title: Blue Magpie feasting on Crested Bulbul!! (NC18) Post by Jz on Mar 9th, 2006, 5:20pm KL park 07/03/2005 1D2/10D While walking in the park, we saw some fluffy things falling from the sky. Thought it was tree seeds but upon chking we realised they were feathers. Immediately we chked the sky, no raptors in sight. Then we saw some movement up in a nearby tree. To our horror, we saw a bird in the claws of a Blue Magpie. The rest are all in the images ::) ::) :P Sorry for the poor quality though #1 plucking feathers http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/jzsfotografix/blueeatred01.jpg #2 taking a chunk of meat off http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/jzsfotografix/blueeatred02.jpg #3 mutating the head http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/jzsfotografix/blueeatred03.jpg #4 close up of the killer http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/jzsfotografix/blueeatred04.jpg #5 all's over http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/jzsfotografix/blueeatred05.jpg The 'crime scene' is near the waterfall. We know that various birds like magpies, chinese bulbuls, laughing thrushs and sparrows go there for their bath during this time and has somehow gain mutual trust. Somehow during the feasting, all the birds strangely disappear except 4 Blue Magpes. So we suspect the Magpie attacked the Bulbul and not picking up a dead carcass. Now we hav a bunch of killers in the park ::) |

I still think the quality is too high... Need some blurring... ::) Perhaps you can add something like this before the photos: "The following photos contain graphic scenes and may be disturbing. View at your own risk." (Just kidding ;D) |

Title: Re: Blue Magpie feasting on Crested Bulbul!! Post by Bob Thompson on Mar 9th, 2006, 8:11pm Little Dolphin, I am on your side. I realise that this is nature taking its normal course but maybe to some people the photo's maybe too graphic. Looking at these pictures my first reaction was "this maybe one way that H5N1 is spreading amongst native birds" |

Title: Re: Blue Magpie feasting on Crested Bulbul!! Post by kumanfai on Mar 9th, 2006, 11:40pm If you do not want to watch the photos again, please ignore my question below. :P The last photo shows that the carcass is far from finished. The Blue Magpie is relatively a big bird but seems not to have a proportionate appetite. ??? |

Title: Re: Blue Magpie feasting on Crested Bulbul!! Post by Jz on Mar 10th, 2006, 12:27am i would say the edible parts of the bird is almost 70-80%eaten up. Something we observed is that the Magpie left the body on a branch and took the head somewhere else. The other Magpies then came near the body, probably having the later share of the kill. But before they could consume it, they drop it to the ground during a commotion. ::) This explains why we got the photo of the carcass on the ground. 8) |
