Title: Re: Pomarine Skua ¤¤¸éÅà Post by Mike Chalmers on Mar 13th, 2006, 10:32pm Pippin, Great photos of striking birds. The photos clearly show all three are adults in transition from winter to summer plumage. The all black underwing coverts and axillaries indicate adults whereas younger birds would be barred. The first two birds had whiter sides to the neck whereas the third still retained more of the streaked winter plumage. Note that the outer primary is still growing in at least two birds. This is just right for adults completing wing moult which usually ends in February/March before the breeding season. None of the birds had yet grown the long central tail feathers, which again are not due until late February / April, but one was beginning to show some "twisting" of the central feathers. Lastly all appear to have lost their barred winter undertail coverts, but one bird clearly showed some retained barred winter upper tail coverts when flying away [not in photo]. Lets hope the seabird survey this spring finds many more exciting seabirds like this, and all come within camera range! Mike Chalmers |
