Title: Re: Brambling (male) Post by Falcon on Apr 11th, 2006, 11:35pm Thanks Tony, Daniel and pipenho ;)...i think we were all shocked by this bird's behavier, when it first came close to us. This bird was probably a migrant that just landed on the island when we saw it, so it was really hungry and needed to feed. It didn't even have to strength to fly, it was just walking on the floor most of the time! after a whole hour of feeding on this tree full of food, it started flying around the area and calling as well. I think we were all delightful, to see a rare bird this close. ;D |

Title: Re: Brambling (male) Post by Paul Leader on Apr 12th, 2006, 2:21pm I think this is most likely an escape. The northwards migration of this species through China is early, with the bulk of the passage going through Beidaihe in March; it is very rare south of HK, so unlikely as a passage maigrant and such close behaviour, whilst sometimes shown by tired migrants is extremely unusual in se Asia where hunting of birds of widespread and more often shown by ex-captive birds. In addition, the primary wear is very heavy, even for a first-winter male such as this in April which strongly indicates time in a cage. |
