Note the strong head pattern (dark eye-stripe and lateral crown stripes, pale supercilium and central crown stripe) and the bill shape (fairly straight at the base with a sharp downward angle near the end, rather than a gradual curve as in curlew) Also if you see them together, whimbrel is noticeably smaller than curlew (although this isn't obvious on the photo) |
