Are these 5 photos of the same bird?

I can see that photos 1 & 2 are Asian Paradise Flycatchers. However - perhaps it's the light, perhaps the camera-angle, or perhaps just me - but I would be less sure about ascribing photos 3,4 & 5 to Asian Paradise.

To my eyes, in these photos there is a definite maroon tinge to the mantle and a definite contrast between the rufous-brown rump and the duller, brown tail.

Dave, except the first one I taken at 09:30. the rest we taken together in midnoon, they might be the same bird as the exif show both on my photo #2 and #3 are almost the same time. but they keep jumping in/out disappear and appear so really can't 100% sure about this. But what my feeling is there are two Paradise Flycather at least both in the morning and midnoon.

Looking at the photos again, I suspect it's the particular shaded light that is making the tail appear less rufous to my eyes than it is in reality. The light probably also explains the mantle colour.

I believe two Asian Paradise Flycatchers were reported near Hide 2 at Mai Po on 20th August, so perhaps there are two birds involved in the photos.

Not sure about the first two but I think that the rest of these are Japanese Paradise Flycatcher. Note the maroon tones to the mantle, coverts, primaries and tail contrasting with the more rufous secondaries, tertials and rump. I think that this two-toned appearance is right for Japanese at this time of year and wrong for Asian.

Given lack of eye ring and dull bill colour this is a young bird (not sure if it is technically a juvenile or a first winter as I'm not sure of the moult stategy).

Having looked at all the photographs of the Paradise Flycatchers that have recently been posted, I now agree with Mike Leven that these are Japanese.

In fact, I think that nearly all of the photographs posted in the last month - most of them labelled Asian - are in fact Japanese.

Most of these photos of paradise flycatchers seen from behind show the contrast mentioned by Mike above - darkish, sometimes maroon-toned mantle and tail (although the tail can be variable, sometimes being less dark on some birds) contrasting with paler tertials, secondaries & primaries.

The only photos of a definite Asian Paradise Flycatcher as far as I can tell were posted by Kittykoo on September 22nd. It is worth comparing kittykoo's photos with the others to sort out the differences.
