Hi, Hendrix.

May I ask a question about driving on snow during winter.  Is driving on snow difficult or dangerous for HK drivers who have no similar experience?

Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to say these beautiful photos bring back many wonderful memories of my own trip to Hokkaido in winter 16 years ago - it is Rausu in the pictures isn't it? These pictures are very special, but as I recall the light is so splendid that even I came back with some first class shots of the gulls.

Hope you are going back to Tokyo by sea - that journey was some of the best birding of my life.

Concerning driving in the snow, the cars all have studded tyres and are front-wheel drive (or were then), giving greater control, and if you drive carefully you'll be fine.  You should never allow your car to get out of control, of course, and if you don't, you don't have a problem - unless you get stuck in a drift, that is!

Thanks for your advice, Miket.

I have the experience of driving in Japan a number of times.  But all of them were not in snowy conditions.  The rental cars are now all equipped with GPS and navigation has never been easier.  I am planning to visit Hokkaido in coming Xmas.  It is meant to be a family trip but I will surely squeeze some time for birding.  Your idea of travelling back to Tokyo is great.  A quick check of my travel guide reveals ferry connections between Hokkaido and Aomori, Sendai or Ooarai .  Did you remember if you were on one of those?  :D

In those days (1990) there was a ferry all the way to Tokyo, but I believe that service stopped in the late 90s and now you can only go as far as the placed you mentioned, all of which are to the north of Tokyo, I believe.

I believe you are right.  The ferry service stops at either Sendai or Ooarai, both are north of Tokyo.  But I think it does not much reduce the attractions.  Anyway my trip planning is still in its early stage and I am hoping for the best.  Thanks for sharing.
:)
