Title: Re: Hokkaido Winter birding ¥_®ü¹D´ç¥V³¾Ãþ Post by Uncle_Tall on Dec 19th, 2003, 11:31pm The Blaskiston fish owl is also our dream bird and the best tick for the whole trip. We had not seen this bird in our first trip in 1997 nor in both of our trips to China NE. This is an endangered (CR) species with around 100 birds in Hokkaido and may be a only few hundreds in the whole world (exists also in Amur and Ussuri area in Russia Far East , Sakhalin, Kurile Islands and may be in Chang Bai Shan). In Japan, it is strictly protected. We have met the most experienced Japanese in this aspect, Mr Sumio Yamamoto. He got quite some scientific publications and two colourful books concerning conservation of this beautiful owl. (He is the one on TV!!) We sincerely hope that this species is still surviving in China. By the way, this owl was fed with fishes every night near a minshuku. Despite he is quite tame, when we were staring each other through our binouclars or camera, we could still feel his fierceness. There were other photographers who set up a big array of equipments to capture the owl in picture. We made use of their focusing light for exposure at ISO 1600, 1/10s, f4 and tungsten white balance with EOS 300D and 400mm F4L, hand-held inside car. Thanks to digital photography. Without it, the owl would have a pair of red eyes or the whole picture turned yellow. |

Even though it was surprisingly close to shore. By the way, storm-petrel is the smallest kind of sea birds. This particular species is 21cm long with a 46cm wing span (Harrison). Just can't imagine how a small bird like this survive on open sea. |
