Title: Re: 老余~~long tailed duck Post by Project Officer on Mar 29th, 2004, 9:14am Dear cccp Welcome to Hong Kong! Sorry that some character couldn't shown on the screen, here is anothe piece of information from Liu Yang/Silvia: Source: Oriental Bird Club e-mail group Quote" ----- Original Message ----- From: "silvia choi" <silvia_cca@yahoo.com.hk> To: <orientalbirding@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2004 11:06 PM Subject: [OB] Long-tailed Duck: The First Record for Beijing Dear All: At 1320h on 28 March, while we took spring waterbirds count in Beijing, a Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis was seen at Western Lake, Summer Palace (39 9.326'N, 116 15.678').When we arrived at the spot, it was sitting buoyantly with three female Goosanders.Elongated central tail feathers and black bill with broad pink band indicated that it was an adult male. However it was in molt phase as the front, neck and breast turned to be blackish-brown. It also can be indistinctly observed that the scapulars had buff fringes.Light conditions were fairly good. Birders in Summer Palace had excellent views through the spotting scopes although the north wind was a bit strong, force 4-5, and the high temperature was 23 degree centigrade as had been forecast. It remained there for about 3 hours and flew northward with the Goosanders at 1640h.The digital photos were taken and find at: http://www.wwfchina.org/bbs/bottomtest.shtm?channelid=7&ddd=240264&id=240351 Long-tailed Duck was stated as a rare winter visitor by Cheng (1987), and very little wintering records were in Helongjiang, Liaonin, Hebei, Tianjin, Fujian and Middle Yangtze River Valley. Summer Palace is not only a world culture heritage but also an interesting waterbirds- catching place. The first record of Cotton Teal occurred here in 1925.A Japanese Cormorant specimen was collected here in 1935.A Red throated Loon and several pairs of Bewick's Swan recorded in 2002 and a Red-throated Merganser in 2003. Title: Re: Long-tailed Duck 長尾鴨 (Beijing 北京) Post by Michael Kilburn on Jun 27th, 2004, 5:29pm Summer Palace is a very good birding spot for ducks. I also saw Mandarin and male Baikal Teal here in winter of 1990. Another unusual duck I saw was a single Velvet Scoter here in early 1991. Cheers Mike |
