Very nice photos and birding indeed!
Taking the Buffy Owl must have been exhilarating - how did you manage that in the dark? What was the setting of the encounter?
By the way the 'Wallace's' could be a Besra. It is quite an elegant and slim accipiter.

Koel,

Thanks for the correction.

We took a night cruise along the river to see the owls and other nocturnal creatures. The guide used a spotlight to search for them (via their iris reflections). I tried to take photos using a 300/2.8 with 550EX flash handheld. At first I tried to using autofocus and thought that the focus assist light on the flash would help me to focus in the dark. But I soon found that it didn't work because the subjects were too far away. The lens simply didn't respond at all. I had to use manual focus. Although it was tough, but at least I can get some photos this way. Unfortunately by the time I started to get the hang of it, the show was over. Most of my pictures were blurred, including an otherwise perfect frontal shot of the owl without "red" eyes. But it was too blurred to be of any value.  :-[

Agreed! the joy in photogrphy of birds does not exist purely in taking good photos. It is in knowing them better as well and learning how to 'cope' with them, to live with them and appreciate the little souls behind the feathers  :D
