Title: Eurasian Hobby 燕隼 (Qian Shan 千山, Liaoning 遼寧) Post by Uncle_Tall on Sep 12th, 2004, 11:01pm We are so glad to see a family of 4 Eurasian Hobby fluorished in this park near Anshan (鞍山), around 2 hours drive from Shenyang. This is a park famous for its Buddha and Tao temples with good secondary forrest. We spent one whole day birding there. In the early morning, woodpecking sounds echo through the forrest despite there are already plenty of traffic. We saw great spotted, grey-capped pygmy and Japanaese pygmy woodpeckers. At night, oriental scops owls can be heard nearly at every corner in the mountain. On the other hand, we are a bit disappointed not seeing any migratory thrush nor flycatcher. Title: Re: Eurasian Hobby 燕隼 (Qian Shan千山, Liaoning遼 Post by Uncle_Tall on Sep 14th, 2004, 10:58pm On reviewing our video, it is interesting to note that the Hobby (esp the young) is frequently surrounded by magpies. In fact Magpie is larger than the Hobby, but of course much more clumsy in flight. When the young was fed, the Magpies stayed at the lower branches, hoping something may fall off from the feeding Hobby on the upper branch. Parents often come back to chase away these unwanted neighbours. |
