Title: Chinese Merganser Ducklings中華秋沙鴨仔(Heilongjiang) Post by Uncle_Tall on Jul 8th, 2005, 11:50pm Chinese Merganser Ducklings中華秋沙鴨 Mergus squamatus http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/PhotoG/uncletall/uncletall_042.jpg http://www.hkdcug.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/13206/Merganser%20Duckling%201c.JPG Bishui Provincial Nature Reserve, Dailing, Heilongjiang 黑龍江帶岭碧水保護區 20D+300F4IS 30/6/2005 The ducklings are 27 days old, hatched on 3/6/2005 and jumped out of their treehole nest on 4/6/2005. This year we are so lucky to experience their birth. Though we came late in June. But the Nature Reserve really tried their best to locate all the nests in the region. Then they set up webcam inside the 1 treehole, connected to a computer underneath with a 2.5km power cord to record the whole process into harddisk up to the point they left the nest. We witnessed how the mother nursed the eggs, the hatching process and how they jumped out of the nest. This is really amazing and probably a big step in their behavioral study and conservation. Unfortunately, the staff are NOT professionals (just timber managers appointed as directors in the reserve) and really have little fund to run the reserve (Annual subsidy from Forestry Department RMB 98000 for the whole reserve including 15 staff) With probably less than 1000 in the wild and rapidly deteriorating breeding and wintering grounds, we really don't know how to help in the conservation of Chinese Merganser. Title: Re: Chinese Merganser Ducklings中華秋沙鴨仔(Heilon Post by Uncle_Tall on Oct 13th, 2005, 9:25pm We received some photo from the reserve a week ago. It is video-capture of the nest of Chinese Merganser, which is probably the first ever video capture in the world for this species. http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/PhotoG/uncletall/uncletall_043.jpg http://www.hkdcug.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/13206/Merganser%20nest.jpg You may realize that it is "black and white" because inside the treehole it is quite dark. Only grey-scale video can be captured. Their experience and equipment is really limited. We would kindly like to urge again in this forum for any kind of advise or help. |
