Betty> 1. How many kites were seen on 13/11 ?

We haven't formally counted but I think at one time there have been around 300 flying.

This is not as many as the number observed on 2004-11-20[6].  One possible explanation is that the day was rather hazy and kites come back at a lower rate over a longer period of time for night roosting.  On more sunny days like 20th, we observed that kites come back at a higher rate over a shorter period of time.

A formal snapshot count involves counting every kite we see, flying or roosting, and will have a number higher than 300.  Accumulative count, on the other hand, count the number of kites coming into and going out of a virtual bounday in the surveyer's mind and wil give a higher result since roosting kites that can't be seen would probably be counted when they go into the valley.

The Black-eared Kite is a common sight of the Hong Kong skyline. The HKBWS organized a public kite watching activity at Magazine Gap to promote its conservation yesterday. The HKBWS Kite Group explained that despite their raptor appearance, Kites are relatively shy birds that won't catch live chicks for dinner. (¡§Kite Snatch Chicks¡¨ is a Chinese children's game). Caution was also given against disturbing the birds.
