The January 2005 Waterbird Count took place on 16 January 2005 (Sunday) at Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, it is coincided with the annual Asia Waterbird Census organzed by Wetlands International ЁV Asia Pacific.

In the last Hong Kong survey in January 2004, a total of 36,478 waterbirds were counted in the Deep Bay area including Futian, of which 23,915 were recorded in the Ramsar site. The largest group waterbirds was waders, constituting 9,847 (35%) of birds present in the area. Great Cormorant comprised 8,964 (32%) individuals. The number of waterbird in Deep Bay area has an overwhelming decrease compared to that in January 2003 (See Table 1).

The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) is a regional programme organized by Wetlands International ЁV Asia Pacific to promote public participation to monitor the distribution and populations of waterbirds and status of wetlands. The census has been an ongoing effort since 1987. The AWC covers the region of Asia, from Pakistan eastwards to Japan, Southeast Asia and Australasia. AWC runs parallel to other international census of waterbirds in Africa, Europe, West Asia and Neotropics under the umbrella of the International Waterbird Census (IWC).

We will submit result of the January Count of the Waterbird Monitoring Programme to incorporate as a part of the "Asia Waterbird Census". For detail information and result of the count, it is available for download at the HKBWS website at:
