Recently Black-faced Spoonbills have been recorded at Ma Tso Lung, an area where they are not usually found. This morning (9th Jan) I had 12 birds there. This is the highest count on record there.

Hi Geoff,

Any implication so far may you draw upon the observation? Just wonder why they seldom visited there in the past.

Probably simply a case of there being suitable feeding areas closer to Mai Po than MTL (e.g. Lok Ma Chau, San Tin, Tsim Bei Tsui). As numbers increase in HK (over 200 this winter), then birds need to travel further afield for foraging.

The records of BFS at MTL this winter highlight the importance of this fine area to waterbirds. It is to be very much hoped that it remains a wetland area in the future, rather than being developed.
