Mr/Ms A21 is an old friend. :) It carries a radio backpack too:

Tung,

Could you tell us where does A35? come from, and what is the bulky device mounted on its left leg? ???

A35 and A34 (both shown in this series of excellent photos) were both trapped in Hong Kong last winter as part of a radio-tracking exercise of Black-faced Spoonbills.  Also present this winter is A37, which is another of the birds tracked last year.

The device you can see on the left leg is the radio-transmitter.  This weighs only 16g, and the birds soon adapt to the presence of the tag; it has obviously not been a problem for migration, as the birds involved must have migrated to the breeding grounds and returned.

The tags are attached by a leather strap, which is designed to decay over time so that the tags fall off. Another of the birds which was tagged (ring number A36) has been seen in Macau this winter - there is another posting on the Bulletin Board which shows this bird. The tag has already fallen off, which shows that these tags should hopefully not stay as long as the backpack-style tag which can still be seen on A21.

Sightings of colour-ringed spoonbills such as these are useful for building up a picture of their behaviour over successive winters.  It would be very useful if any sightings could be reported to Yu Yat-Tung or posted on the bulletin board

Further to my previous message, you may also be interested to know that A35 was also observed at Chongming Island near Shanghai on 2nd April 2003. This site is 1300km from Hong Kong.

Thanks for the update!  It is always interesting to find out how these regular visitors fare outside Hong Kong.
