Title: Black-faced Spoonbill injured by hanging fishook Post by Mike_Kilburn on Feb 7th, 2004, 5:03pm Sad news! A BFS was found with a hook stuck in its wing in the San Tin Area! This is the third BFS in the last two winters to be injured by a hook - the other two died last winter. These hooks are DELIBERATELY set by fish pond operators. This activity is ILLEGAL. Those who BREAK THE LAW should face the consequences. AFCD have already spent more than HK$500,000 to help fish farmers protect their fish by hanging wires without hooks. How much is being spent to stamp out these terrible practices? If farmers continue to hang hooks purely to kill and injure birds they are not acting reasonably. When is it serious enough to take serious action? Hong Kong has an INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY to protect the Black-faced Spoonbill. . . Right now we are FAILING. How you can help 1) Immediately report any fish hooks (either hanging from wires or found in fishponds and baited with fish), mist nets or other traps to AFCD: the senior AFCD Officer responsible for preventing illegal activities is Wong Che Lok. His email is clwong@afcd.gov.hk and his phone number is: 2150 6921. 2) Call the nature wardens responsible for patrolling on 2474 8974 or 2476 9430 or 2471 4411 (especially outside office hours and at weekends). Keep these numbers on your phone or in your notebook. 3) Post your sighting, with photos if possible on the HKBWS BBS Conservation section. This does 2 things: i)it keeps us all informed and ii)allows AFCD to see that we are serious about supporting their conservation efforts. 4) If you find an injured bird call AFCD immediately. Kadoorie Farm will treat most birds, but it is better if AFCD staff can handle the bird. 5) Copy HKBWS Conservation Committee (mkilburn@hkstar.com) on all correspondence, especially responses from AFCD in relation to such actions. Follow up with AFCD to see what actions have been taken. The Conservation Committee can also help with this. |
