Discovery of breeding Chinese Crested Tern at the coastal area of Zhejiang
by Shuihua Chen (Zhejiang) and Chung-wei Yen (Taiwan)

10 Chinese Crested Terns were found out of 4,000 Greater Crested Terns at the Jiushan Islands at Xiangshan, Zhejiang province. This is the result of the surveys along the coastal islands at Zhejiang over the last two years.

The Chinese Crested Tern Sterna bernsteini is know to be the smallest number among the Laridaes. "Waterbird Population Estimate ¡V Third edition" (Wetlands International 2002) indicated the highest estimated number for the species is below 50.

The Chinese Crested Tern has also been included in the book "The Fifty Rarest Birds of the World" produced by International Council for Bird Preservation (nowadays "BirdLife International") for its scarcity. Recent known status for the species is that the bird is summer visitor at eastern coastal area of China, and winter visitor at Indonesia and The Philippines. In China mainland, the bird has been recorded in Fuzhou at 1913, there were specimen records in at Fuzhou in 1925 and Qingdao in 1937. There were also individual observation records in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and Yellow River Delta area. However, no confirmed record could be tracked, in particular to their breeding ground and relevant status. Some even considered that the species is extincted (A Field Guide to the Waterbirds of Asia (1993)). Until June 1998, a photographer Chieh-te Liang found 4 pairs of breeding individuals and 4 juveniles at Matsu islands. The discovery raised concern locally and internationally as it proved the existence of the species.

Starting from the last year, a "Zhoushan Qun Dao coastal resource research group" was formed jointly by Zhejiang Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Natural Science. The group conducted systematic surveys at northern part of Zhejiang coastal area, in particular at Zhoushan Qun Dao in the last two years. However, there was no positive result of breeding Chinese Crested Terns. On 1 August 2004, Zhejiang Museum of Natural History was invited to conducted a survey at a coastal reserve at Jiushan Islands, and the survey resulted that Crested Crested Tern breeding at one of the islands. This confirmed record of the globally threatened species is also the first known breeding record found at area outside Matsu Islands.
